Although this party is hard as nails to get through Astos with, after that everything becomes a lot simpler. The major difficulty is having enough patience to break out of the Coneria/Pravoka/Elfland (Bermuda) triangle. Having minor black magic as ninjas, a wide array of weaponry and armor, and dodging most attacks, this party becomes vicious in the later game.

This party owns EVERYTHING after class change. Black magic, katanas, you name it. Kills everything. Only downside is the limited armor.

I agree that this is difficult, one of the most difficult 4-person parties. You need to be at least level 10 to beat Astos -- at that point they finally get two hits with their lousy Scimtars.
Later in the game they have no killing power so you're forced to do major leveling to get through the Temple of Fiends.

If you don't upgrade, four White Mages (no upgrades either) are better.

No kidding four white mages are better. That party is actually pretty strong with clever uses of Ruse/Invs/Mute, and can nuke any undead into oblivion. 4 Thieves = fight button

This party is a lot better in DoS. Instead of JUST a high retreat rate, you got a high retreat rate, high accuracy, high attack count, high evade, and high critical hit rate. The best part is a starting thief in DoS can hit twice with just a rapier or knife!

Some guy posted a walkthrough somewhere (probably GameFAQs) on beating the game with four (non-upgraded) thieves.
Got pretty technical about it, too.
This party is a nightmare in my mind: not only are these guys pathetically weak, the strongest weapon useable until the Masamune (if I'm not mistaken) is the Coral Sword.
No thanks.

No white magic. I can't live [literally]without my white mage/red mage. I don't care how much i like the thief.

The REAL challenge is going through the game with just four Thieves instead of four Ninjas...
This and an all-White mage party are the storied challenges of all FF1dom.

The real challenge is going through the game with solo Thief- no class change.
Playing the game with 4 Thieves doesn't carry the same amount of Geek-prestige, and it's just plain difficult.
Especially in the outfitting. There's only 2 Katanas in the game. One is in the ToF (In other words, you never use it except against Chaos, like the Masmune, and that's hardly any fun). WTF. More than one Thief is simply making the game less fun.
