this is a good party for fanfics:
Red mage as team leader/all-around hero guy.
Fighter as dumb but strong dude(likely rm's friend/brother).
White mage as gratuitous kind/spunky hot chick(often hero's girlfriend).
Thief as the calm and/or arrogant badass(sometimes fighter's long lost bro, but often just a dude who came to help).

I used this party because I wanted to make it like Lord of the Rings.
White Mage: Gandalf
Red Mage: Aragorn
Thief: Legolas
Fighter: Gimli
...in that order

I played this one of FF Origins for PSX.
It's pretty good, kinda lacks offense in the end but you'll sure has hell never die. WW keeps everyone alive while RW and Ninja turn the Knight into an unstoppable killing machine.

I'm using this party now on an NES playthrough. I've used this before in Origins as well.
It's a very easygoing and defensive party. You'll be sure to take quite a few hits. The Red Mage is more durable than the Thief early on which means you'll have better defense and a Thief to keep alive longer in case you need to run. White Mage handles all the healing tasks while the Red Mage can take a mix of buffs (Haste! Anti-(insert element) and attack magic.
After promotion, you can switch spots between Red Wizard and Ninja to bring the Ninja up to number 2. You'll have a solid attacking party, but you'll be a little light on attack magic all throughout.
The only tough part of this party is choosing what you want for the Red Mage. Attack magic is necessary for disposing some enemies and large groups, but with less MP than a Black Mage, and the desire for a backup healer, you may have problems deciding. Money may be a concern early on because of the expensive nature of the Red Mage but this should be an issue if you can easily breeze through battles.
I would suggest relying on magical items and equipment for attack spells once they are available. This will surely be of help!

You can't go wrong with this party.
Fighter in the first slot to tank. No need to explain.
Thief in the second slot to run from arduous encounters. The reason why I don't have the Red Mage (who has better armor than the thief or the early part of the game, but not the later part of the game) in the second slot is because the first two slots for some reason have greater success rate of escaping. Also capable of casting Fast as a Ninja. Also the ability to equip Ice Armor which I believe is the second best armor in the game after Opal Armor and Dragon Armor being equal Absorb. Somewhat weak attack on bosses however.
Red Mage for Black magic that can target multiple enemies (for early on in the game before you get magic casting items) and Fast. Also good for an extra healer. Decent armor and weapon selection early in the game. Silver armor is good for him also Silver sword. However poor attack on bosses.
White mage for obvious healing reasons. Hrm2, Hrm3, etc. for undead. I usually stick her with the healing rod once I get it and cast it every round when trying to conserve magic in dungeons.
Perfectly balanced. <3 thief/ninja

Just on a side note I'm level 14 outside the Mirage tower with 3 orbs lit and 300,000+ G. Also I never purchased equipment beyond the first town Corneria. I only bought magic and plenty of Heal potions and plenty of Pures. Seriously bring as many as you can. And i just bought a bunch of tents and raided the dungeons running from all the battles with the thief. Okay im going to keep playing now. oh, no save states btw. only as backup after saving legitimately

Rm instead of BM???
Nah.
Replacing the WM is fair, but this is just overkill healing with characters who can take hits fine enough already.
It isn't a bad party at all, but if the quest is the "perfect" party, then this one is a miss.
