Yesterday I wrote 150 lines of code for FFC*. Impressed? This weekend is looking promising for me to have free time to work on it some more. *(None of them were related to the tournament in any way.)

The server keeps crashing, which is kind of annoying. I'm aware of this and working on it. It might take me a while (couple days) to fix though. I'm also aware I haven't updated in a while, but I'll be updating more frequently once I scrounge up some time. I have a lot of other projects I had to devote attention to, but those are winding down a bit now.

Good news everyone. Nicole and I are all set up in our new apartment and my computer is out of its cardboard/tupperware prison. The bad news however is I that have a business trip for the next week. As Nicole said, I just moved to Canada for good last week. It was a stressful couple of months. Right now the computer with the source code for this site is in a dozen pieces scattered throughout tupperware containers in my wife's dad's house. This is not conducive to working on the site. I just wanted to reassure you that I will continue to work on the site once I have time. I have many ideas I still want to implement, and yes, the tournament. Keep in mind that I have a job where I write code that people actually pay me money for, and that this money is essential to providing food and shelter, without which it is very difficult to produce FF1 website content. In other news, I'm thinking of turning this into a fansite for the NES Legend of Zelda game. FF1 is pretty overrated anyways. Stay tuned for the big move to zeldaclassic.net.

Sorry I haven't been active here quite so much. Most of the reason for this is that I'm making my own FF-style RPG. Surprise! You can see a very, very, very preliminary demo (video) here. Most of the art is just crap I threw together to make sure the game engine works. The whole thing is written from scratch, so it's slow going, but fun so far. Stay tuned for a playable demo probably in another month or two at this pace. Nicole is helping with the art/music/ideas/everything but the programming. Give us both some encouragement if you like.

Those of you browsing the site at 4AM may have noticed some downtime. Not sure what happened on the server but I fixed it. In other news, yeah the tournament is still coming. Flying back and forth between countries doesn't lend itself to working on websites. I'll try for this week.

I'll probably start the tournament this weekend or sometime early next week. Unlike previous tournaments, this is going to be an NPC-only tournament. Previous tournaments were completely dominated by the Light Warriors, which was rather predictable. Taking out Fighter and Black Mage will make things a bit more balanced. Thank Nicole for the idea.

FF1 fan-made sequel?

alex95 has posted on our very own forums about a sequel to FF1 that he has been developing using RPG Builder. There's a video and a couple of screenshots. More in the forum. It looks true to the NES FF1, with some graphical and gameplay updates. I think the project looks pretty interesting. The ending to FF1 always seemed cryptic and somewhat unsatisfying to me. What was the world like 2000 years in the past? Could be interesting to explore that. Here's hoping this project actually finished, unlike so many fan attempts at FF1 remakes and spin-offs in the past.

FF1 for iPhone / iPod Touch

Because the world just doesn't have enough FF1 ports yet, Square is apparently making a version of FF1 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. From the two screenshots so far, it looks pretty much identical to the PSP port, but with huge ugly touchable icons instead of a menu. Honestly I'm all in favor of remakes, if it brings FF1 to a new generation of gamers. It's a good game and it's cool that it's survived 20 years.

I did a bit of work on the site today to make it easier to keep track of discussions that might be going on. There's a new Stats page which will show you the pages with the most comments and the threads with the most posts, as well as who the most prolific ~~spammers~~ posters on the site are. I also added a page to let you view All Comments on the site in one enormous list. The forums also now show you who the most recent poster was. Hopefully this makes it a bit easier to see when new posts have popped up. 571 comments and 482 posts in 41 forum threads. Some of you have a lot of spare time on your hands.

By my count, we're up to about 30 registered users after a little over a week and a half. That's not too shabby. Thanks everyone who is registered and participating around the site. Please spread the word about the site too. The more the merrier. I'm kind of flying to Canada this week, so I will be busy this week and completely incapacitated for a few days this weekend (Jan 9th). But then I will have a ton of free time in Canada, so work on the site will resume in earnest next week.

I've re-implemented the Parties page, now with 57% less cheating, since you have to be logged in to vote. I discarded all the old vote counts, because they were a bit inflated (thousands of votes for some parties), because it was so easy to cheat. I also added a profile field so you can select your favorite party.

I'm still touching up a few loose ends here and there. Check your profile, you should have some additional fields you can fill in now. It's pretty awesome how many people registered so far. Question: Would anyone be interested in the ability to upload fanart? FF1-related fanart of course. I'm thinking about letting people have fanart galleries associated with their user accounts. Anything else you'd like to be able to do at this site? Private messages perhaps? Leave a comment. Coming soon: an explanation of what the heck EXP is for. PS: Right now every time I reboot the server, it's going to log you out. Sorry. Also right now there's no way to recover your password (yet; I haven't written the code for it). If you lose or forget your password somehow in the meantime, register again and we'll figure it out.

Surprise, I rewrote the website. You can register a user account in order to leave comments. Feel free to try it. I'm still testing a lot of stuff so don't be surprised if I wipe everything at some point and start over, but I don't have any plans to right now, hopefully it won't be necessary. Some sections are missing (tournament, parties) but will show up once I write the code for them. On the other hand, all the charts are much more complete now, including Japanese text and stuff. Also I fleshed out the PSP section, there are sprites and other goodies. PSP music may follow once I figure out if it's worth uploading the crappy-quality MP3s I have. I have a message board all coded up but I'm not enabling it yet until I'm sure other things are working. If you find any bugs let me know. I'll write an FAQ about the user system soon (once I actually decide how it's going to work). Please try to vote on the poll. This site had its 10th anniversary in October of this year. The first version of the site was hosted on Tripod and was pretty painful to look at. Hopefully this new version of the site will last me another 10. Thanks to everyone who has been visiting for a while. I'm glad when anyone finds the site useful.

I just got around to reading the two years of comments I've been ignoring, and noticed that they consist of equal measures thoughtful and interesting gaming discussion, and developmentally-challenged children making a lame attempt at trolling. So I have removed the comments for now. In the off chance I ever feel like reading them all to weed out the crap, they will be restored later. In the future, commenting will involve registration of a user account. I also plan to add a message board to the site soon, for another place to have discussion. I apologize to all of the people who came here looking for info about FF1 and ended up reading a bunch of silly flamewars. That isn't the kind of site I like to run. Sadly I have neglected this site in favor of real life concerns and some other sites I run that took higher priority. To those who contributed good discussion to the site, you have my thanks. Please stick around. Unlike all of those other times I promised to start working on the site again and never did, this time I actually am working on it. I have plans. The server move was the first step. (I just finished ripping all of the PSP music and sprites; you can look forward to those soon.) Thanks again for everyone who visits this site in spite of my laziness and apathy. My apologies again on any abuse any of you have had to put up with.
